Brexit, London
The UK leaves the EU
January 31 – February 01, 2020
A divided nation
January 31st, 2020. Outside Parliament Square, Brexit supporters celebrated while others mourned. Flags waved, speeches echoed, and Britain prepared to leave the European Union after 47 years.
Two sides
Union Jacks wave alongside EU flags being lowered for the last time. Some people are in tears, others sing patriotic songs. Police stand between opposing groups, keeping the peace as history unfolds.
Parliament Square
The square fills with contradictory emotions. Champagne bottles pop while others hold vigils. Big Ben towers above it all, counting down to 11 PM.
Eleven o’clock
The crowd erupts — cheers and jeers simultaneously. Fireworks explode over the Thames. Britain is officially out, and nobody knows what comes next.
