Shiratani Unsuikyo — a lush, green, moss covered forest with ancient cedar trees. The forest was used as inspiration for the movie Princess Mononoke.

Otherworldly atmosphere

Yakushima is a subtropical island off Kyushu’s southern coast. The mountains catch moisture from the ocean, creating one of Japan’s wettest climates. Everything grows thick with moss and ferns.

Walking through these forests feels like entering another world. Twisted branches draped in moss, filtered green light, the constant drip of water. It’s easy to understand why Miyazaki chose this place.

The forest somehow has an otherworldy feel to it. Branches curl around and worn out trees give the impression the forest has a hidden life of its own.

Ancient cedars

Some trees here are over 1000 years old. The wet climate and poor soil forced them to grow incredibly slowly, building up protective resins that prevent decay. They’ll outlive us all.

Yakushima has a lot of ancient trees (Yakusugi) that are more than 1000 years old. High rainfall and low soil nutrition forced these trees to grow very slowly, but they built up high amounts of resin, which protects them from decay.
