Coast of Brittany
Rugged coastlines and Celtic heritage
July 26 – August 04, 2021
Rocky shores
Granite cliffs meet the Atlantic, worn smooth by centuries of waves. Tide pools form between rocks, water rushing through channels. The coastline fractures into points and coves, each headland revealing another bay.
Stone and sea
Boulders scatter across beaches, polished by salt water. Seaweed drapes over stone at low tide. Breakers crash white against dark rock.
Coastal paths
Footpaths wind along clifftops, gorse bushes flowering yellow between rocks. Views extend across water to distant headlands. The GR34 coastal trail traces 2,000 kilometers around Brittany, following the customs officers’ path.
Between tides
The sea withdraws twice daily, exposing sand flats and rock formations. Channels drain seaward. Mussels cling to stone, barnacles coating surfaces that hours later will be submerged.
Granite coast
Pink granite formations rise from sand, weathered into rounded shapes. Mineral composition creates color variations—pale gray to deep rose. These rocks are among the oldest in France, formed 300 million years ago.
